Well, that was rubbish.

I’m referring to my ridiculous NaBloPoMo attempt. I lasted 10 days. 10 days. Ruh-bbish. Kudos to all you guys that kept it up so far! The finishing line is in sight and you’ll probably feel like champions by 30th. I’ll feel like  a jealous quitter.

Anyway you’re probably wondering where I’ve been, or you don’t give a crap, but I’m going to tell you anyway:

My job took me on a (very limited) tour of the home counties.

A friend threw a preview party at the British Film Institute on the Southbank for his upcoming 2014 art exhibition.  Cocktails were consumed.

We re-convened at Ping Pong post-party to try and soak up the  alcohol with dim-sum. It didn’t work.

I was cajoled into joining something called Tinder. I instantly regretted joining something called Tinder.

I nursed my hangover at The Diner in Islington. It was surprisingly quiet and chilled for the weekend.

I ate a lot. Sweet potato pancakes, bacon, guacamole, french toast and sausages to be specific. My goody two-shoes brunch date had a vegetarian breakfast. Whatever.

I spent half an hour watching and taking pictures of a squirrel eating lunch outside my bedroom window. Time well spent, I say. Look at his little hands! Darling.

I met my dream man.

I bought a whole pumpkin and turned it into soup. I chucked in a hand full of sweet corn and teamed it with an Emmental, chilli and bacon toasted croissant sandwich. Just call me Nigella.

I took this little lady for lots of walks.

And made sweet potato pie for the first time. It smelled like autumn and made me want to marry myself.

And there we go. What have you guys been up to?

Sundry Sunday

My new thing is raw sauerkraut (I’ve just about learnt how to eat it with my eyes open. This stuff is tart) and fresh miso paste. It’s all about those enzymes and probiotics, people.

Having just run out of my Kate Somerville Goat Cream*, I decided to replace it with something a little less expensive and easier to get my hands on. A raid on the Whole Foods beauty aisle resulted in Pai’s Geranium and Thistle Skin Cream taking centre stage in my beauty cabinet. I’ll report back.

Avocado oil + coconut oil slathered and left on your hair for 20 mins pre shampoo = Nicole Scherzinger hair.

*It was OK. It’s strangely light and rich at the same time. A little goes a long way and too much takes absolutely ages to soak in. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it if it’s not easily available to you.

d.j.v. Beautenizer Volume Lash

OMG, YOU GUYS! Or should that be: My goodness, everyone! Whichever you prefer, stop what you are doing right now and listen up. You absolutely, positively need to make space for this mascara in your makeup bag.

I should warn you, this is not for the bashful or faint of heart. This gives you full on, thick, luscious, Bollywood-style eyelashes. Because it’s so full on there is some potential for clumping but as long as you make sure there’s not too much product on the brush, you’ll be fine.

I gave it the rub test and I can report that there was no smudging or panda eyes and it came off fairy easily with warm water and a wash cloth (you don’t need to use eye makeup remover).

This is a fairly new purchase for me (it arrived today!) so I’ll report back with any niggles that might arise but this might just knock Benefit off my top spot.

*ooooooooohhh, new mascara*

NaBloPoMo Day 7

I’ll be honest, this post is a sop to the NaBloPoMo machine. I’ve had a horribly long day at work and will have to stay up all night preparing for an even longer day tomorrow. Arme ik (‘poor me‘ in Dutch. I’m practically fluent now!)

This picture (not mine and, unfortunately, the source is unknown) sums up how I plan to spend my Friday night, although I’d keep one eye cucumber free so I can watch The Walking Dead.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and figure out a way to self-administer coffee intravenously.

Good night!

Drizzle and Kneipp

It feels as though I’ve spent most of my day walking up and down hilly streets, trying to balance cups of coffee and multiple lever arch files in various strategic points in my arms. And, wouldn’t you know, on the one day of the year I forget to take my umbrella out with me it rained.

Needless to say, by the time I got home I was a soggy mess , but a soak in a steaming bath of this has made me feel vaguely human and possibly staved off the cold that usually follows a day spent walking around with wet feet.

BTW, did you know that ‘bath salts’ in America are drugs? Yeah, Google Images threw up some really weird stuff.

Winter Saviours

Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night as it’s more commonly referred to, is one of my favourite times of year. Fireworks, sparklers, hot chocolate and toffee apples all make standing outdoors on a freezing November night worthwhile. At this time of year I am all about layers, layers and more layers (of clothes, that is) and I never leave the house without a scarf- I am convinced that an exposed neck is guaranteed to result in a cold. To frost proof the parts of my body that can’t be concealed I’m taking the nourish, protect and treat approach as per my incredibly amateurish 1st attempt at a product collage:

(Clockwise from top left)

1. Body Shop Body Butter– To keep my shins scale free

2. Kiehl’s Lip Balm– Because chapped lips aren’t pretty.

3. Aveda Hand Relief– Brilliant hand cream that soothes my cracked hands beautifully.

4. Avene Soothing Moisture Mask– My thirsty skin just drinks this up and at £11.50 it’s just as good, if not better than the more expensive moisture masks.

5. Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm– Because refreshing gel cleansers are for the summer and nothing removes makeup or grime without stripping your skin quite like a balm and a hot, wet flannel/wash cloth. This one is excellent and is fragrance free.

6. Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil– Used underneath my moisturiser like a serum this adds another layer of non-greasy, nourishing, skin softening, scar reducing loveliness.

To all those who don’t give a hoot about what I put in my skin, here’s a picture of some toffee apples:

Ren Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask

I pretty much feel like the last person in the world to have tried this but it. is. amazing. It’s a super exfoliating face mask with a look, smell and texture that sits somewhere between lemon curd and smooth marmalade.  Lovely.

Fruit acids and enzymes loosen and dissolve dead skin cells and congestion to reveal smoooooth, flake free skin without you having to scrub at your face. I’ve used a few similar masks in the past and I’ve been pretty loyal to Bliss’ Steep Clean for the past 8 years but this is definitely my new ‘go-to’ mask. Don’t get me wrong, Steep Clean is a great mask but you cant just ‘pump and smear’ it onto your face as with the Glycolactic mask.

Anyway, it works. I had a flaky skin beard this morning and now, thanks to this, I don’t.

And with that image, I bid you and the internet good night!

Getting My Fill*

I completely overdid it on the Halloween sugary treats this year and my skin absolutely hates me for it. From Monday I plan to adopt a ‘nil-by-mouth’ approach to sugar for the next week or so to compensate, but until then……….

*Blame NaBloPoMo for this utter waste of space I have tried to pass off as a post. It counts though!

Revlon, Double Dutch and Horrible Hounds

Day 2 of NaBloPoMo and my life has already been greatly enriched. I watched video this morning posted by fellow blogger and NaBloPoMo-er Charlene and, after being blown away by her Oscar worthy performance and the fact she had already got her day 2 post up, I had a sudden burst of realisation- I CAN READ DUTCH! Sort of. The video, you see, is based in Utrecht Central Station in the Netherlands and there’s a shot of a large banner with the words 24 uur per dag emblazoned on it. Now, being able to deduce that this means ‘24 hours a day’ may not make me a genius, but I was throughly impressed with myself. This got me thinking- If I’m already this good, I could be fluent by Christmas! A 30 minute trawl through WH Smith paid off and I am now the proud owner of Dutch for Dummies. Watch this space.

Feeling flush with my purchase I found myself wandering into that other stalwart of the British high street- Boots. The makeup sections of the larger stores are very dangerous and it’s impossible for me to leave without buying something. Today, that something was a Revlon Colourburst Lip Butter in Red Velvet (picture above). It’s a beautiful, deep, red wine-esque colour that really channels the whole dark, vampy lip vibe that’s going on right now. It has a gorgeous semi-glossy finish and can be applied as lightly or as full on as you want it to be. It’s definitely my new ‘go to’ daytime red.

With the addition of my first Starbucks red cup of the year, I was feeling very pleased with myself by the time I got home. It didn’t last. The 1st week of November is all about fireworks. Diwali fireworks, Guy Fawkes fireworks and fireworks for the sake of fireworks. I love fireworks. My dog doesn’t. The constant bang bang banging turns her into a very destructive nervous wreck and she had decided to soothe her nerves by trashing my bathroom. The entire contents of the bin had been emptied and strewn across the floor, a mini-wicker basket had been shredded to pieces and my dirty laundry was EVERYWHERE.

She’s lucky she’s cute.
